Song Lyric Story

(I took the last, middle, and first line of various songs.  I won't take credit for the lyrics, certain ideas, or words.  I just wrote.)

Every girl has to face her reflection in the lake.  As the moon shines overhead, our destiny is revealed in the glass-like water.  It is our duty to discover our destiny and report it to the elders of the village.  This will decide whether we should be kept or banished.  The ritual is not just the candle of our society, it is the flame.  It keeps us alive by keeping those who will influence the village for good, but casting out those who will do evil.  I have often wondered if our tradition was correct.  For instance, perhaps the person turned evil in the future because they were cast out.  However, it was not my place to say.  Today, it was my turn to find my destiny.

I put on my best dress and stepped onto the simple stones making up the stairs to the lake.  When I got to the shore, I found the people in my village standing quietly.  Mustering up courage from my parents' eager smiles, I stepped forward and looked into the lake's surface.

The water took on the appearance of silver and milk as the moon sank into it.  The surface shimmered, then turned more reflective.  My pale, anxious face hovered for a brief second.  Then the image tisted.  The lake burst into flames, or at least, the image of flames flickered in its hearth.  My older face appeared covered in ash with hard lines of determination and a fierce smile of some sort.  All of a sudden, the lake went black and the moon was back to reflecting light in the blue-black sky.  I heard muttering behind me.  Then one of the elders stepped forward.

"Erin, we are sorry to inform you that you have been banished from the village."
